Chapter 11

Jason awoke in a cold sweat, his body trembling as he forced the memories away. This time he’d remembered his grand-dam on his sire’s side. Her clouded gray eyes devoid of almost anything resembling life left him cold. She’d been so subdued, so meek in the presence of anyone. He couldn’t even remember her talking for longer that a three-word answer. Her mate, his grand-sire, ruled his home with an iron claw and little regard for the opinions of others.

Despite the subservient relationship he’d seen between the mated couples in his family, he’d never once witnessed physical abuse take place. This probably was due to the fact dragons had a natural instinct to protect a mate above all else, including one’s self. He’d seen it countless times. His sire would lose his temper while speaking to him mother, his fists balled at his sides. But he never struck her.

Abuse was still abuse, though, and what he’d been exposed to his entire life definitely rated as some kind of abuse. Sure, his dam seemed happy in her situation, but she knew no different.

“Hey, you all right?” Michel asked, coming into the room with a cup of coffee in his hand. “It’s still dark out, why don’t you lie down and go back to sleep?”

Jason bristled at the suggestion. “No thank you. I’ll get up when I want to.”

Red-orange eyes gazed down at him with a concerned expression. Jason ignored it. Getting up, he padded his way into the bathroom and ran a hot bath. He didn’t need Michel telling him what to do. Besides, he doubted he could sleep right now. Not with those memories swimming around in his head.

“Would you like a cup of coffee? Tea?” Michel asked from the bathroom door. He wasn’t trying to enter. He merely leaned against the door-jam and watched him.

Jason considered the offer. “Tea.”

“Which type? You have several,” Michel explained.

“Earl grey,” Jason answered, and turned his back to his mate.

“I wasn’t giving you an order, you know,” Michel whispered as he left the room.

A pang of guilt hit Jason as he slipped into the water. So maybe he’d overreacted. Now that he thought about it, Michel hadn’t really been ordering him back to sleep. He’d only suggested it. The reminders of his past were starting to make him edgy. He’d already decided to stay with Michel, to give his mate the chance he deserved. He didn’t want his subconscious pulling shit up from the shadows to torment him now.

Regretting his actions, Jason closed his eyes and sank deeper into the heated waters. This was turning out to be a really fucked-up morning. Worse, he could feel his heat near its peak. He’d probably be fully into it by noon. Which meant Michel was no doubt already suffering the full effects of his heat.

Jason’s heart ached. He’d rejected and snapped at his mate during a time that he needed him most. “I’m scum.”

“No you’re not.”

Jason shot up, water sloshing from the tub at the sudden movement, at the sound of Michel’s voice.
